Jean Arthur and Cary Grant lead a rousing Howard Hawks group singalong of The Peanut Vendor in Only Angels Have Wings (1940)

The Peanut Vendor was originally recorded in 1927 by Rita Montaner as El Manisero.  It wasn’t a hit until a 1930 recording in New York by Don Azpiazu and His Havana Cuban Orchestra, eventually becoming the first million selling 78 rpm of authentic Latin music, and also selling over a million copies of sheet music. It has since been recorded over 160 times including versions by Louis Armstrong and Chet Atkins.

The song was first heard in the MGM film Cuban Love Song (1931), and was whistled by Grouch Marx in Duck Soup (1933), and briefly sung by Judy Garland in A Star is Born (1954).

More recently it was heard in the second season of Breaking Bad, and was recorded in 2001 by Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba on his cd Supernova.

I DID NOT KNOW THAT, was it the “peanuts” song he whistled in Duck Soup??
